Enagás’ Chief Executive, Arturo Gonzalo, highlighted the vital contribution made by gas and green hydrogen infrastructure to strengthening Spain’s resilience. “Today’s gas infrastructure and, in the future hydrogen infrastructure, as well as all renewable energy infrastructure, constitutes a strategic shield for Spain against any kind of crisis that may affect the energy system”, he stated at the CREO 2026 Forum organised by Cinco Días in Madrid on 14 October.

In a conversation with Cinco Días’ Business Editor, Álex Medina, entitled Europe’s strategic autonomy: the role of energy infrastructure, he said that “energy infrastructure does not have to be designed for when everything is going well; it must be designed to be resilient and capable of responding to crisis situations”.

The Enagás Chief Executive stated that the Spanish gas system is “robust, diversified and flexible” and highlighted its remarkable responsiveness in critical situations, such as the electricity blackout.

Furthermore, Spain is better placed than its neighbouring countries to withstand geopolitical tensions in third countries because it has the largest regasification and tank storage capacity in the EU , enabling it to receive LNG from a variety of sources.

In a context in which the EU imports 57% of the energy resources it consumes - almost 70% in the case of Spain - Arturo Gonzalo also highlighted the opportunity presented by renewable hydrogen to secure domestic resources that will strengthen the strategic autonomy, energy security and industrial competitiveness of Spain and Europe.
