Enagás is spearheading the development of logistics infrastructure for new key molecules that are essential for the energy transition. The company’s multimodal facilities enable the integrated management of various energy carriers and decarbonisation molecules, facilitating their reception and dispatch via ship, pipeline, rail, and tanker.

  • CO₂ infrastructure: enables industrial hubs to connect to CO₂ transport and liquefaction infrastructure in coordination with end users and permanent storage systems.
  • Renewable ammonia: Enagás is developing infrastructure to connect renewable ammonia with industry and maritime transport.

Management of CO2 infrastructure

Spain has significant potential for CO₂ capture in its main industrial centres.

Enagás is working to develop the entire CO₂ logistics chain, linking emission sources with transport, liquefaction and permanent storage solutions.

Through pipelines, multi-molecule port terminals and maritime transport, Enagás offers solutions that are tailored to the needs of each supplier and the geographical circumstances of each catchment area. The company acts as both a demand aggregator and an independent infrastructure operator.

Call for Interest CO₂

In the first half of 2026, Enagás launched a Call for Interest (CFI) aimed at CO₂ emitters and consumers in Spain. This open and non-binding process aimed to gauge market interest in the various services within the logistics chain, to determine the scale of the most efficient infrastructure solutions and prioritise development by phases and catchment areas.

Management of renewable ammonia infrastructure

Enagás is driving the development of an integrated logistics network for management of renewable ammonia. This is based on a model of an independent storage infrastructure operator and logistics aggregator within the value chain. This facilitates efficient links between producers, industry and maritime transport.

Through strategic partnerships with third parties and port authorities, Enagás is helping to create a robust market for renewable ammonia. These partnerships promote demand aggregation and optimised, safe and competitive logistics.

The infrastructure relies on synergies with LNG terminals and their maritime facilities, including bunkering activities, to accelerate the development of ammonia as an energy carrier. These synergies extend to a multi-molecule approach (BioLNG, H₂, NH₃ and CO₂), thereby maximising the efficiency of existing assets and facilitating the integration of new value chains.

Enagás promotes the development of logistics facilities designed to operate with multiple users and adapt to market needs. The main advantages include:

  • Making use of existing infrastructure by converting LNG tanks and utilising available space for new ammonia projects.
  • Energy optimisation, including using LNG’s cooling capacity in ammonia-related processes.
  • Strategic location in industrial ports, close to centres of production and consumption, and compliance with the highest safety standards.
  • Optimisation of the supply chain, thanks to the integration of maritime transport, warehousing and distribution.

Furthermore, the company is driving technological innovation through initiatives such as the ‘REACT-NH₃’ project, in partnership with the National Centre for Metallurgical Research | CENIM CSIC and funded by the Centre for Technological Development and Innovation (CDTI), as well as the utilisation of residual cold from LNG in the ammonia value chain.
