Today, Enagás announced the launch of two non-binding Calls For Interest, one for hydrogen and the other for the CO2 logistics chain, scheduled to begin on 18 May.
The CEO of Enagás, Arturo Gonzalo, stressed that “the aim of these calls is to ascertain and update the interest of the sector’s main agents in these two areas: the first for potential producers, consumers and marketers interested in using hydrogen infrastructures; and the second for emitters and users of CO2”.
Both Calls For Interest will be available on two specific, independent platforms on the Enagás corporate website. Online information sessions will also be organised for the sector, explaining the steps involved in the process, how to take part, and answering questions.
The information session for the hydrogen call will be held on 18 May at 3:30 p.m. Once finalised, the platform will enable access to the participation form. This form will be available until 18 June.
For the CO2 call, the information session will be held on 20 May at 10:30 a.m., and the form will be open for completion until 30 June.
The results from the information received on the two platforms will be processed in aggregate form and with the utmost confidentiality.
Up-to-date market information on hydrogen
To assess the potential of the national green hydrogen market, Enagás launched a non-binding hydrogen Call For Interest in Q4 of 2023. The aim of this process was to gauge interest in the sector and determine the scope of the initial routes for the Spanish Hydrogen Backbone Network.
The results of this call were presented in January 2024 during Enagás’ 2nd Hydrogen Day and confirmed the proposal for this hydrogen backbone infrastructure for Spain. This infrastructure is currently included in the European list of Projects of Common Interest (PCI).
Since the initial Call for Interest was launched in 2023, the development of the Spanish Hydrogen Backbone Network has progressed according to schedule. The infrastructure, which will comprise 2,600 kilometres of pipelines distributed across 15 sections, has made significant progress in its technical development, with the basic engineering for most sections of the network now complete and the detailed engineering phase underway for several of them.
In parallel, Enagás is implementing the Conceptual Public Participation Plan (PCPP), which is the largest participatory process ever carried out in Spain for an energy infrastructure project. It covers 13 autonomous communities and more than 500 municipalities.
This degree of progress means that the development of the Backbone Network is at a more mature stage, making this a particularly appropriate time to launch a new Call For Interest to update market information.
Market consultation for CO2
During the consultation process initiated by Enagás in 2023 for hydrogen, information was also gathered on CO₂ projects. The objective of this new Call For Interest is to review, update and extend the data from the 2023 consultation, in order to reflect market evolution and obtain updated information that will enable the sizing and planning of CO₂ infrastructure development.
This Call For Interest will enable the comparison and adjustment of the hub solutions that Enagás is developing in Spain. The aim is to define and offer emitters and potential users efficient, need-specific logistics solutions that facilitate decarbonisation and access to public financing.
