  • The project aims to capture around one million tonnes of CO₂ per year at the Molins plant in Sant Vicenç dels Horts (Barcelona), thereby preventing up to 1.1 million tonnes of emissions each year.
  • The initiative combines advanced capture technologies and CO₂ transport infrastructure, and has the potential to contribute to the decarbonisation of other industrial sectors.

The EU Innovation Fund, one of the world’s largest grant programmes for low-carbon technologies, selected the Mosusol-NetCO₂ project, led by Molins in collaboration with Enagás and Linde, to receive funding under its Net-Zero Technologies (IF25 NZT) call for proposals. The initiative focuses on developing advanced CO₂ technologies and will help to decarbonise hard-to-abate industries, positioning Spain as a leader in carbon management innovation.

This recognition highlights the project's innovative nature, technological robustness, and potential to deliver large-scale decarbonisation solutions.

An innovative solution for reducing industrial emissions

Mosusol-NetCO₂ envisages the implementation of an industrial scale CO₂ capture system at the Molins cement plant in Sant Vicenç dels Horts (Barcelona), with the capacity to capture around one million tonnes per year, including the biogenic fraction. The initiative will enable the capture of approximately 97% of the emissions associated with producing Portland clinker and calcium aluminate, avoiding up to 1.1 million tonnes of CO₂ per year.

The project brings together the expertise and capabilities of the three companies. The promoter of the initiative, Molins is leading the development of the capture system at its plant. Enagás will be responsible for the CO₂ transport infrastructure, and Linde will provide the carbon capture technology and the oxygen required for the oxy-combustion process via an air separation unit.

Marcos Cela, CEO of Molins, said: “The European Commission’s selection of Mosusol-NetCO₂ marks an important milestone in our decarbonisation strategy”. This decision recognises the potential of a project that combines technological innovation and industrial collaboration to address one of the key challenges facing our sector: reducing CO₂ emissions. Here at Molins, we continue to make progress in developing solutions that contribute to a more sustainable and competitive industry, in line with European climate targets”.

Arturo Gonzalo, Chief Executive Officer of Enagás added: “Mosusol-NetCO₂ is an example of how innovation and collaboration can drive progress towards large-scale decarbonisation solutions. The European Commission’s selection of the project is a significant step forward in developing a value chain for the sustainable management of CO₂, where infrastructure and the logistics hub development play a pivotal role”.

Baltasar Palanca, Managing Director of Linde Gas Spain, said: “Mosusol-NetCO₂ demonstrates how a combination of technological innovation and collaboration between companies can turn climate targets into specific, large-scale projects. At Linde, we are committed to developing solutions that can drive industrial transformation and significantly reduce CO₂ emissions”.

A new impetus for industrial decarbonisation

The European Commission’s selection of the project, for which funding is subject to the signing of the relevant grant agreement, represents a significant step forward since Molins and Enagás announced their collaboration to promote the application to the Innovation Fund back in February 2025. The initiative has once again been awarded the STEP seal (Strategic Technologies for Europe Platform), a European quality mark that recognises projects aligned with the EU’s priorities in the development of strategic technologies.
