The CEO of Enagás, Arturo Gonzalo, has emphasised the strength of gas infrastructures in the current geopolitical context. “The Gas System is a strategic asset for the security of Spain and Europe”, said Arturo Gonzalo during his speech ‘The resilience of gas infrastructures, a pillar of the energy system’, at the Sedigas Annual Meeting in Madrid on 21 May.
During his speech, the Enagás CEO highlighted the Gas System’s responsiveness during the pandemic, last year’s blackout, and the current geopolitical context.
“Resilience is never the result of chance, good fortune or improvisation; it is built day by day through forward planning, so that when difficult times arise, we have the capacity to absorb shocks and respond”, he remarked, highlighting Spain’s pivotal role in Europe due to its diverse supply sources, substantial storage capacity, and enormous regasification capabilities.
“We are doing this efficiently and competitively. Thanks to this, Spain has the cheapest tolls in Europe”, he pointed out, noting that tolls for domestic consumers have fallen by 40% and by 70% for industrial consumers during the current regulatory period.
Arturo Gonzalo also emphasised the contribution of infrastructure to the fight against climate change through renewable gases and LNG for new applications, such as the decarbonisation of maritime transport. “We have an absolutely unique opportunity for our country, our territories, our industry and our consumers. Green hydrogen and its infrastructure are Europe’s great energy shield for the coming decades”, he said.
The strategic autonomy provided by infrastructure will be bolstered by indigenous resources, such as renewable hydrogen and biomethane. “The Gas System plus renewable gases equals resilience for Spain and its consumers”, Arturo Gonzalo reflected in his speech at the Sedigas Annual Meeting. The event was officially opened by Sedigas Chairman Joan Batalla, Secretary of State for Energy Joan Groizard, and Director of the Representation of the European Commission in Spain Daniel Calleja.
