Demand for natural gas for electricity generation breaks the historic record for the second day in a row

  • This new record is due to the effects of high temperatures, which lead to an increase in electricity consumption, coupled with low hydro, wind, photovoltaic and solar thermal generation

Yesterday, June 16, demand for natural gas to produce electricity reached 770 GWh, surpassing the record of 764 GWh reached the previous day (June 15).

This huge increase in the demand for natural gas for electricity production has been mainly due to the high temperatures recorded as a result of the heat wave, which lead to an increase in electricity consumption, accompanied by the same reasons for the previous day’s record high: low hydro, wind and also photovoltaic and solar thermal generation, due to the haze.

This new consecutive increase in demand for electricity generation highlights the coordination of the electricity and gas systems to guarantee supply in a context of energy transition, and the important role that natural gas plays as a back-up for renewable energies at times of record demand.

The demand forecast for natural gas for electricity generation today, coinciding with a slight increase in wind, photovoltaic and solar thermal generation, is lower than the previous two days.
