  • The Enagás Chief Executive pointed out that all the off-take capacity on offer at Spanish regasification terminals has already been contracted for the next 13 years

The Enagás Chief Executive, Arturo Gonzalo, gave a preview of the results of the latest auction for off-take capacity at Spanish regasification terminals, in which all the slots on offer were allocated for the next 13 years.  “This highlights the enormous interest in Spain’s gas infrastructure,” he told the 43rd Seminar of the Association of Economic Journalists (APIE), held in Santander between 22 and 26 June.

“The Spanish gas system is one of our country’s great strengths, acting as a genuine shield against global energy disruptions”, he stated, highlighting Spain’s high level of flexibility and diversification in its LNG supply sources.

He explained that although the global market has partially offset the decline in LNG flows from the Persian Gulf, the war in Iran has resulted in an additional cost of 8.8 billion euros in Europe and 1 billion euros in Spain, causing an increase in gas bills.

“In times of geopolitical crisis, when there is turbulence in the hydrocarbon markets, we must respond at a European level with a clear commitment to the rapid adoption of green hydrogen”, he emphasised.

Arturo Gonzalo emphasised that energy infrastructure, the promotion of indigenous energy sources and renewable hydrogen will all be key to strengthening the energy security, competitiveness and strategic autonomy of Spain and Europe. The Enagás Chief Executive spoke at a conference organised as part of the Menéndez Pelayo International University (UIMP) summer courses, moderated by APIE course directors Miguel Ángel Noceda and Amancio Fernández.
