The University of Oviedo and Enagás today signed a business collaboration agreement that launches the Chair for the Development of Sustainable Energy Vectors. The agreement establishes a joint collaboration framework that will enable a technical-economic study to be carried out to adapt the Musel E-Hub liquefied natural gas terminal in Gijón as a multimolecule plant (eterminal), which will enable climate-neutral molecules such as green hydrogen and its derivatives to be stored and managed.
The Chair will develop a feasibility study of the new sustainable energy vectors, in the context of the energy transition, as well as the selection of the best future alternatives for the Musel E-Hub Plant - 75% owned by Enagás and 25% by Reganosa - such as renewable hydrogen or the transport and storage of CO2, among others.
The signing ceremony, held today in the Historic Building of the academic institution, was attended by Ignacio Villaverde, Dean of the University of Oviedo; Claudio Rodríguez, General Manager of Infrastructures at Enagás, Javier Perera, General Manager of People and Transformation at Enagás, and Ignacio Muñumer, Head of Organisation and Talent at Enagás.
The Chair, which will have a validity period of four years, is the first of a long-term collaboration in which the two entities will promote R&D projects and activities aimed at the social promotion of research and technological development. This new Chair is part of the initiatives envisaged within the framework of the Enagás Corporate University, which promotes the development of knowledge in the field of sustainability and decarbonisation.
78% of the professionals working at the Musel E-Hub Terminal are from Asturias and form part of a team of around 50 people. In addition, the terminal is set to create about 100 indirect jobs.
In July 2023, the Musel E-Hub liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal received its final commissioning certificate and, in August, the first commercial ship docked at the terminal.
