Infrastructures ready for the energy transition

Infrastructures are a key part of the Gas System because it allows energy supply to reach companies, industries and homes throughout the country. Its contribution to security of supply is key: today with natural gas and tomorrow with renewable gases such as green hydrogen.

Enagás is promoting different initiatives and projects that allow us to adapt our assets and to develop new infrastructure to meet the new challenges posed by the energy transition.

With the REPowerEU plan, Europe acknowledges the value of current gas infrastructures as the foundation for the future European hydrogen backbone and also envisions the establishment of hydrogen corridors to link producer countries with centres of demand.

H2Med will be the first renewable hydrogen corridor in the European Union

On this basis, the company is working together with the TSOs in France and Portugal on the approach to develop the first renewable hydrogen corridor in the EU, H2Med -a project that Germany has also joined. It has also presented the first two axes of the Spanish Hydrogen Backbone Network, as well as a proposal to analyse the feasibility of two underground hydrogen storage facilities. In December 2022, Enagás submitted all of these projects as contenders to the European Union's call for Projects of Common Interest (PCIs).

The H2Med initiative and the Spanish Hydrogen Backbone Network will serve as the building blocks for establishing Spain as the first hub for renewable hydrogen in Europe.
