The Government of Aragón and Enagás collaborate on the development of renewable gases projects

25 July 2018

The Director General for Industry, SMEs, Commerce and Crafts of the Government of Aragón, Jesús Sánchez Farraces, and Enagás’ CEO, Marcelino Oreja, have signed a document at Fundación Hidrógeno Aragón by which Enagás seeks to join the entity’s board of trustees.

The regional government of the Spanish autonomous community of Aragon and Enagás have today discussed the possibilities of collaborating on the promotion and development of projects for the use of renewable gases such as hydrogen, biogas and biomethane. The Director General for Industry, SMEs, Commerce and Crafts of the Government of Aragon and Vice President of the Fundación para el Desarrollo de las Nuevas Tecnologías del Hidrógeno en Aragón (Foundation for the Development of New Hydrogen Technologies of Aragon, Fundación Hidrógeno Aragón) Jesús Sánchez Farraces welcomed the CEO of Enagás, Marcelino Oreja, to the foundation’s facilities in the Walqa Technology Park. This meeting has served as an opportunity for the company to become a member of the entity’s board of trustees.

The visit by Enagás to Fundación Hidrógeno Aragón and the possible collaboration between the two forms a part of the Government of Aragon’s objective of promoting energy savings and efficiency and the use of renewable energies, while fostering the coherent and effective development of energy infrastructure. In this sense, through Fundación Hidrógeno Aragón, the regional government is upholding its commitment to the development of hydrogen technologies and fuel cells, in particular, as a vector for the storage and management of energy generated in particular from renewable sources, and to link this production with the energy requirements of the transport and sustainable mobility.

This collaboration would allow the Government of Aragon and Fundación Hidrógeno Aragón to become the ideal partners to support Enagás projects and research, development and innovation (R&D&I) in fields such as sustainable mobility and the production of renewable hydrogen. Enagás is currently sponsoring different projects for the development of non-electric renewable energies, such as hydrogen, biogas and biomethane, as new energy solutions that are key to the decarbonisation process, and in order to bring about a circular economy. The company is also working on initiatives for the use of natural gas in transport, essentially maritime and for heavy goods vehicles, in order to improve air quality and reduce emissions.

The company is an international leader in the development, maintenance and operation of gas infrastructure. It is certified as an independent transmission system operator (TSO) by the European Union and currently operates in eight countries.

The company is present in Aragon with a Technological Centre, which houses its R&D Centre, Central Laboratory and one of its data processing centres. Aragon is also home to key infrastructure to guarantee the security of supply in Spain: an underground natural gas storage facility in the region’s Serrablo district, 640 kilometres of high-pressure gas pipelines, a compressor station in Zaragoza, and three transmission facilities in Caspe, Serrablo and Zaragoza.
