Enagás CEO Arturo Gonzalo stressed that Spain, as a renewable hydrogen hub, can make a key contribution to Europe's strategic sovereignty, a top priority for the EU. "Hydrogen is the perfect opportunity for Spain to play a leading role in the new stage of energy autonomy in Europe", he said during the first day of the Wake Up Spain! forum, held from 31 March to 4 April and organised by El Español, Invertia and Disruptores.
In a conversation with Laura Ojea, Editor-in-Chief of Energy in El Español-Invertia, the CEO of Enagás stressed that "Spain can produce the most competitive green hydrogen in Europe". "We have the resource, the territory and the value chain," he added.
The Enagás CEO stated that "with a well-designed and efficient infrastructure, an energy market, in this case the green hydrogen market, can be sustained in effective and competitive terms" and highlighted the crucial role that the Spanish network will play, which will have 2,600 kilometres of pipelines and will be operational in early 2030.
The European H2med corridor is also on schedule for implementation. "Deadlines are being scrupulously respected. Everything we said was going to happen is happening", explained Arturo Gonzalo.
"Europe's commitment to decarbonisation is stronger than ever" because "it is now also part of other major EU objectives such as strategic autonomy", he reflected. "For Europe to succeed in this challenge, it needs to rely on its own indigenous resources, such as renewable electricity, renewable hydrogen or biofuels that are generated on its own territory", he said.
