Enagás CEO Arturo Gonzalo stressed that renewable gases will accelerate their expansion in the coming years, with biomethane and green hydrogen leading this transformation of the energy model. "Renewable gases will play a fundamental role in the decarbonisation of Europe and in achieving strategic and competitive energy autonomy in the long term", he said during his presentation A roadmap for the deployment of renewable gases in Spain at the 51st Sedigas Annual Meeting, held on 8 May in Madrid.
During his speech, Arturo Gonzalo stated that having a robust and flexible system of renewable molecules is "critical for decarbonisation and competitiveness", highlighting the "key role" of the Spanish Gas System in promoting a European market for renewable gases.
In this regard, he stressed that Spain and Enagás are leading the energy transition, with the deployment of renewable hydrogen infrastructures and milestones such as the creation of the Guarantees of Origin System by Enagás GTS in 2023 at the request of the Ministry for Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge, which already has 194 registered entities and more than one million guarantees issued.
"The next step will be the automatic connection of the Guarantees of Origin System with the electricity guarantees of origin platform managed by the CNMC and market platforms such as Mibgas", he stated.
In terms of infrastructure, he stressed that both the H2Med corridor and the Spanish hydrogen backbone have strong political and financial backing from the European Union. "Enagás has obtained 100% of the CEF funds requested for the studies and engineering phase, and H2Med-related projects represent 39% of the total financed by the European Climate, Infrastructure and Environment Executive Agency (CINEA)", he stated.
Enagás' General Manager of Engineering, Technology and Digitalisation, Susana de Pablo, also took part in the round table "Renewable Gases: Renewable hydrogen, biomethane and other low-carbon gases. Challenges and opportunities". Susana de Pablo explained the implementation of cutting-edge digitalisation initiatives in the development of the future Spanish hydrogen network during a session that also featured the Director of the Industry, Energy, Environment and Climate Department of CEOE, Cristina Rivero, and the energy analyst of the International Energy Agency (IEA), Ana Alcalde, with moderation by the Secretary General of Sedigas, Naiara Ortiz de Mendíbil.
