Enagás, through its subsidiary Scale Green Energy, and Cemex have signed a collaboration agreement to analyse and develop comprehensive solutions for the maritime transport of CO₂ captured from the cement manufacturing process, with the ultimate goal of contributing to the decarbonisation of the industrial sector. In addition, this collaboration includes exploring the potential development of CO2 transport through pipelines.

The partnership envisages the development of the CO₂ value chain, including the capture of carbon dioxide emissions at Cemex facilities and their transport by sea in a liquefied state via a new vessel developed by Scale Green Energy, to a licensed and operational storage facility in southern Europe.

"This partnership to develop integrated logistics for the maritime transport of CO₂ captured represents an opportunity for Enagás and Cemex to jointly lead innovation to help decarbonise the industry, boosting its competitiveness, and for Spain to play a leading role in helping to achieve the European Commission's target of capturing 50 million tonnes of CO2 by 2030", said Jesús Saldaña, Enagás' General Manager of Business Development and Investee Companies.

"To make progress in the decarbonisation of the cement industry, it is essential to develop large-scale logistics solutions that can handle large volumes of COsafely, efficiently and competitively. This agreement allows us to lay the foundations of a pioneering infrastructure that will connect Cemex plants in Spain with the main storage hubs in the Mediterranean, strengthening our carbon capture projects," said Benjamín Cabrera, Director of Cement and Technology Operations at Cemex Spain.

Scale Green Energy will develop a new generation vessel with a capacity of 20,000m³ for the transport of liquefied CO₂, which will allow operational flexibility and a more agile implementation to connect with different authorised and operational storage points in the Mediterranean.

The various agreements reached between Enagás and Cemex represent a key strategic step in the company's decarbonisation roadmap, especially with regard to reducing emissions that are difficult to abate at its factories in Spain. This collaboration is in line with the objectives set by Cemex in its "Future in Action" strategy, by facilitating the development of logistical and technological solutions for the capture, transport and storage of CO₂.
