Demand for natural gas in Spain set a new 2013 record yesterday

03 December 2013

Demand for natural gas in Spain set a new annual record yesterday, 2 December, of 1,429 GWh, which topped the previous high set on 28 November.

The cold front of the past few days has pushed demand for natural gas in Spain to a new 2013 high. Cold fronts generally have a knock-on effect in the ensuing days, when domestic and commercial consumption continue to rise even though temperatures move back to normal levels.

At the same time, natural gas consumed for power generation yesterday reached 333 GWh/day, its second highest level of the year, thanks in part to a smaller contribution by wind power.

The annual high in demand was exceeded comfortably, meeting the entire demand of the System and all export obligations.

Judging by weather forecasts, demand could set further highs throughout this week.
