Enagás' Director of Strategy and Planning, Mayte Nonay, highlighted the crucial role of gas infrastructures as guarantors of the electricity system. "In critical moments such as the pandemic or the recent total electrical power outage, gas infrastructures operated at 100%, feeding the combined cycles that were decisive in stabilising the electricity system", she said at the 3rd Energy Transition Forum organised by El Periódico de la Energía on 24 September in Madrid.

Nonay highlighted the role of natural gas as a back-up for the electricity system. "The energy transition will not only be electric," she said. She also argued that the future hydrogen network will also contribute to a balanced energy system: it will connect the points of hydrogen production, linked to the most competitive renewable generation, and the main points of demand.

"Spain will become a world-leading hub for green hydrogen," she said, highlighting the crucial role of the Spanish backbone network and the H2med corridor. In this regard, she highlighted the recent event in Berlin of the H2med South-western Corridor Alliance, which has been joined by 40 new members of the hydrogen value chain in Europe.

Mayte Nonay took part in a round table moderated by the Director General of AELEC, Paloma Sevilla, which also included the participation of the Director of Network Planning and Regulation at Iberdrola, Gregorio Relaño; the Director of Regulation and Strategy at Cuerva, Juan Guerrero Jiménez; the General Manager of Infrastructures and Networks at Endesa, José Manuel Revuelta; and the Head of Facilities Development at Red Eléctrica, Luis Velasco.
