  • Fernando Impuesto, Director of Business Development at Enagás, emphasised the importance of public-private partnerships to foster this technology during the business seminar on CO2 organised by elEconomista

Fernando Impuesto, Enagás’ Director of Business Development, pointed to the opportunities for the capture, transport, use and storage of CO2 and the investments being made in these technologies by different companies. “We’re witnessing the birth of a new industry”, he declared during his speech at the elEconomista business seminar titled Roadmap for the capture, transport and storage of CO₂, held in Madrid on 18 June.

Fernando Impuesto explained that CO2 capture is complementary to decarbonisation with renewable energies and that it will play a key role in achieving the EU’s decarbonisation targets; the European Commission estimates that Europe will need to capture 50 million tonnes of CO2 by 2030.

Enagás’ Director of Business Development stated that CO2 capture is an “opportunity for Spain to decarbonise and attract industries” and underlined the investments being made by the domestic business fabric and its willingness to become more sustainable through this technology.

The Call for Interest for the initial axes of the hydrogen network launched by Enagás in 2023, which also included a consultation on CO2, identified the interest of Spanish industry in capturing 10.4 million tonnes by 2030. Public-private partnerships are vital to drive this sector. “We have to cooperate with private agents and the public sector to provide an efficient solution for Spanish industry”, argued Impuesto.

The discussion was chaired by Rubén Esteller, Deputy Director of elEconomista, and the panellists included Pedro Mora, President of PTECO2, Joaquín Pérez de Ayala, Director of Decarbonisation and the Energy Transition at Técnicas Reunidas, and Irene Lores, Head of Clean Energies at Exolum.
