The CEO of Enagás, Arturo Gonzalo, has highlighted the importance of Andalusia in the development of the European hydrogen network during the opening of the 2nd National Green Hydrogen Congress held in Huelva on 4, 5 and 6 February.

“Andalusia has extraordinary potential to help Spain become the great European green hydrogen hub. A hub that will be connected to the heart of Europe through the Spanish Hydrogen Backbone and the H2med corridor,” he stated.

The CEO stressed that Enagás had submitted the Huelva-Algeciras section to the 2nd call for European Projects of Common Interest (PCI). This section would be integrated into the Vía de la Plata Axis, which is part of the Spanish Hydrogen Backbone. Both H2med and the Spanish network and an underground storage facility will receive 100% of the funding we requested from the CEF (Connecting Europe Facility) funds for studies for their development.

The CEO of Enagás also explained that the Enagás LNG Terminal in Palos de la Frontera (Huelva) is going to be adapted to become a multi-molecule terminal, which will make it a strategic benchmark in the decarbonisation of maritime transport in the Atlantic. “We are working to adapt it to work with other renewable molecules and, together with the Port Authority of Huelva, to extend the quay so that the terminal can offer bio-LNG and renewable ammonia bunkering services,” he noted.

In his speech, Arturo Gonzalo stressed the importance of cooperation between the energy sector, industry and public authorities to promote reindustrialisation, economic growth and social progress in Spain and Andalusia through the development of green hydrogen.

During the first day of the Congress, Enagás Hydrogen Director, Jesús Gil, also spoke at the session “Hydrogen infrastructures: progress in the deployment of a Backbone in Spain”, highlighting that the company will carry out the largest Public Participation process carried out in Spain, with close collaboration with 13 autonomous communities and more than 550 municipalities.

In addition, the Coordinator of the Hydrogen Technology Observatory, Igor Pagazaurtundua, highlighted in a parallel session the objectives of this initiative, which already has more than 40 partners from the entire hydrogen value chain.
