  • The Enagás CEO declares that Spain will be one of the first countries in Europe to have a hydrogen backbone network by 2030

Enagás CEO Arturo Gonzalo underlined the importance of the regulation envisaging the key role of the Spanish Gas System and its infrastructures in the security and sustainability of the energy system, as well as the role of green hydrogen in the future. “Good regulations are as important as good infrastructures. We’ve been presented with a unique opportunity and Spain needs the right framework to seize on it”, he stated on the first day of the 10th Energy Forum organised by elEconomista in Madrid on 10 September.

He stressed that this is a key moment for the energy sector and Enagás. “Projects that came into being as a result of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and formed part of REPowerEU, that great European project, have begun to come to fruition”, he maintained, stressing that this plan establishes the target of Europe consuming 20 million tonnes of green hydrogen by 2030.

“We’re going to be one of the first countries in Europe to have a hydrogen backbone network”, declared Enagás’ CEO in his speech during the panel discussion titled Infrastructures and the development of renewable gases, pointing to the technical progress of the infrastructure and the development of the Public Participation Plan currently being deployed by Enagás in over 500 municipalities and 13 autonomous communities.

Gonzalo affirmed that the backbone network will be ready by 2030 and highlighted its crucial role in connecting the production projects, which are well underway, and allowing the surplus to be exported to the rest of Europe via H2med. “Spain is the most competitive country when it comes to producing renewable hydrogen”, he emphasised.
