The Chairman of Enagás and of the Foundation for Energy and Environmental Sustainability (Funseam), Antonio Llardén, highlighted the enormous potential of the Iberian Peninsula as a European hub for electrons and renewable molecules. "Spain, and Spanish energy companies, have an essential role to play in making the energy transition a success in Europe", he stressed at Funseam's 14th International Business Symposium, Europe facing a climate, economic and geopolitical crisis, held at the headquarters of Foment del Treball in Barcelona on 2 February 2026.
"We need to promote an industry, a technology and - this is fundamental - an energy that is made in Europe", he underlined during his speech, in which he introduced the Executive Vice-President for a Clean, Just and Competitive Transition of the European Commission, Teresa Ribera, who opened the event.
Llardén emphasised that Europe has always been built in adversity and stressed that, with the energy transition, Europe has an enormous opportunity to strengthen its autonomy.
"Decarbonisation must go hand in hand with competitiveness and, of course, security of supply, which is fundamental for our industries and for society as a whole", he stressed.
Enagás' Director of Strategy and Planning, Mayte Nonay, also took part in the round table discussion The private sector in the face of the climate challenge, in which she presented the progress of the green hydrogen infrastructures that Enagás is developing: "The Spanish backbone and H2med are among the eight energy highways identified as priorities for the EU and are moving at cruising speed,” she said.
Nonay also highlighted the strategic role of renewable hydrogen: "the climate emergency and the European commitment to strategic autonomy demand the speeding up of the green hydrogen deployment agenda", she pointed out in a panel in which the Executive Director of Regulation in Spain at EDP, José Manuel Pérez Rodríguez, also participated; the Head of Investees, Operations and Sustainability of the ACS Group, Cristina Aldámiz-Echevarría; the Head of Corporate Strategy at Repsol, Antonio de la Torre; the Head of Sustainability and Energy Transition at Moeve, Olalla del Río, and the Head of Sustainable Development at Foment del Treball Nacional, Salvador Sedó.
