With this bioLNG service we are playing our part in speeding up the decarbonisation process of the transport sector, responsible for 30% of the total greenhouse gases emitted into the atmosphere in Spain.
Available at our terminals in Barcelona, Huelva and Cartagena, this service is one of the first in Europe to use the equivalence liquefaction model, allowing tankers and ships loaded at these terminals to accredit that LNG is fully or partially bioLNG, by issuing bioLNG proofs of sustainability (PoS) as of biomethane PoS.
These three terminals are EU ISCC-certified (International Sustainability and Carbon Certification), accrediting that they comply with the criteria laid down by the European Commission to be able to offer this service safely and efficiently.
The biomethane fed into the gas network is recognised as bioLNG in regasification plants, thanks to the concept of interconnected infrastructure approved in Regulation 996/2022.
Enagás issues bioLNG Proofs of Sustainability (PoS) to accredit that the LNG that shippers load into tanks or ships at our terminals in Barcelona, Huelva and Cartagena is fully or partially bioLNG.
Proofs of Sustainability of bioLNG issued must be linked to physical loading operations of tankers or barges at the Barcelona, Huelva and Cartagena LNG terminals.
Be certified by a European Commission-recognised Voluntary Scheme.
Be a natural gas shipper in the Spanish Gas System and be set up in the TVB (Virtual Balancing Tank).
Have a signed Framework Agreement for the bioLNG service.
Bunkering has undergone exponential growth in recent years in Spain, with a nine-fold increase since 2022 up to 3.8 TWh supplied in 2024. This proves the potential of the bioLNG service to play its part in decarbonising transport by sea and land alike, through the supply of this biofuel by tanker or barge.
LNG and bioLNG are currently the most mature alternatives to cut down on the emissions of the transport sector while contributing to the global decarbonisation process.
