• Consumption of natural gas reached 465 GWh, the highest summer figures since 2011
• This information highlights the importance of natural gas to guarantee the supply of electricity
• So far this year, total gas demand in Spain has increased by around 6% and deliveries for generating electricity have risen by 19%

Yesterday, 21 July, natural gas demand for power generation reached 465 GWh, the highest summer figures since 2011. This increase was mainly because of the high temperatures recorded yesterday due to the current heatwave, as well as to a decline in hydroelectric and wind generation. This information highlights the important role natural gas plays in guaranteeing the supply of electricity.

Conventional demand for domestic, commercial and industrial use registered 643 GWh yesterday. So far this year, total gas demand in Spain has increased by around 6% and deliveries for generating electricity have risen by 19%. Industrial demand for natural gas has also grown by 8%.

The record demand reached yesterday for gas for the electricity sector was met and demand by the System was handled with normality.

The State Meteorological Agency forecasts a spike in temperatures for the rest of the week, meaning that these new records could well be broken.
