A mobile exhibition starts road show around Spain and Portugal to show the benefits of liquefied natural gas (LNG) as fuel

20 April 2017

• An LNG-powered semi-trailer built ad hoc for the ‘LNG Social Acceptance’ initiative of the CORE LNGas hive will be travelling throughout the Iberian Peninsula to communicate the benefits of LNG, for transport particularly maritime transport.

• LNG produces about 30% less CO2 emissions than conventional fuels, eliminates sulphur dioxide and particle emissions, and substantially reduces nitrogen oxide emissions.

A mobile exhibition has today begun its journey through Spain and Portugal to raise awareness of the benefits of liquefied natural gas (LNG) as a fuel. The semi-trailer, which is being towed by an LNG-powered tractor unit on loan to Enagás from IVECO for this purpose, set out from Madrid today on its six-month itinerary around the Iberian Peninsula with the aim of publicising the benefits of and promoting social acceptance of LNG.

This initiative is a part of the CORE LNGas hive project, co-funded by the European Commission, coordinated by Enagás and led by the Spanish Port System. Through the mobile exhibition, it aims to explain the use and benefits of LNG as fuel for transport, particularly maritime.

The mobile exhibition is supported by the 42 partners in the CORE LNGas hive project and will raise awareness of the fact that LNG is one of the most environmentally friendly fuels, which is why its use is being promoted for maritime transport and in port areas around Spain, Portugal and Europe.

This activity has taken profit of the study on the social perception of LNG, conducted in order to know what citizens, experts in the sector and institutions thought of LNG as an alternative fuel. The results of the study led to the strategy used in and the messages conveyed by this initiative that is commencing today in Madrid, before going to the 2nd Annual International LNG Summit being held in Barcelona on 24 and 25 April.

The semi-trailer’s route, which covers the Iberian Peninsula and foresees to be present at events and forums from the sector, is available on the project website www.corelngashive.eu

More on CORE LNGas hive project

The aim of the project, co-financed by the European Commission,  coordinated by Enagás with the leadership of Puertos del Estado is to develop a safe and efficient, integrated logistics and supply chain for LNG in the transport industry (small scale and bunkering), particularly for maritime transport of the Iberian Peninsula.

CORE LNGas hive contributes to the decarbonisation of the European corridors of the Mediterranean and the Atlantic and is a step in the career of reduced emissions, the promotion of clean energy for transportation driven by the European Union.

The Iberian Peninsula has a geostrategic position in the world and possesses gas infrastructures and LNG logistics know-how to consolidate as a European benchmark leader in LNG and an international hub.

LNG is an environmentally friendly fuel, given that it generates about 30% fewer emissions of CO2 than conventional fuels. Moreover, it eliminates emissions of sulphur oxides (SOx), particulate matter (PM) and nitrogen oxides (NOx), which will allow complying with increasingly tight environmental regulation, particularly improving the air quality of port environments.

It involves 25 studies, to be conducted by the 42 partner companies participating for adaptation of infrastructure and logistical – commercial development in order to offer small-scale supply services and bunkering.

In addition, the project CORE LNGas hive offers the know-how to other European countries for the development of procedures and regulation and the establishment of training activities, promotes the international expansion of the LNG sector. and it integrates initiatives within a coherent and project global through the combination of public and private efforts.
