Gas Measurement and Quality

Quality of Gas at Enagás Plants and Measurement Systems

The Measurement Process determines the quantity and quality of natural gas flows in all those points of the gas system that, according to current regulation, is compulsory or considered necessary. It considers the reception of natural gas by pipeline, loading/unloading LNG vessels and LNG trucks, as well as the use by other transmission and distribution system operators, or end users.

The Spanish regulation establishes the kWh as the unit for natural gas energy. The calculation of the energy is carried out by considering the volume of gas measured in normal conditions (T=0ºC, P=1,01325 bar) and the High Calorific Value (HCV) which is obtained by natural gas chromatographic equipment analysis. The measurement of natural gas is performed with metrologic certified and approved equipment by independent and prestigious Official Bodies, and using international standards currently in effect.

The natural gas or non-conventional source gases (NCG) which are injected into the Spanish gas system must comply with the quality specifications established in the Protocol Detail PD-01, which belongs to the Spanish Technical System Management Regulations.

The procedures and terms related with the measurement of natural and liquefied natural gas are available in the Protocol Details PD-01 and PD-05 of this web page, and which belong to current Resolutions of the General Directorate for Energy Policy and Mines.

All the measurement services offered by Enagás are certified according to ISO 9001 standard, ensuring the continuous improvement orientation, standardization, traceability of the process and communication mechanisms.
