Corporate Responsibility

Our Context

Against an ever-changing social and economic backdrop, only those companies who are able to meet the expectations of their stakeholders will be profitable and sustainable in the medium and long term.

Enagás considers that the business success the Company is seeking requires a balance between economic growth, social cohesion and environmental protection, while at the same time taking into account the expectations of its stakeholders (customers, shareholders, employees, regulatory bodies, etc.).

Enagás has been working for several years to improve its position in the area of Corporate Responsibility and, as a result, since 2008 the Company has been a member of the Dow Jones Sustainability World index (DJSI).

Furthermore, in September 2006 Enagás was admitted to the FTSE4Good, and in September 2009 it joined the Ethibel Excellence Investment Register, both of which include companies that set the benchmarks in best CSR practices. For a company to be admitted to these indices, criteria such as human resources, the environment, code of ethics, corporate governance, contribution to society, human rights and relations with stakeholders are assessed.

Furthermore, Enagás has been a member of the United Nations Global Compact since 2003. This is an ethical commitment initiative which encourages companies worldwide to incorporate within their strategy and operations ten universal principles concerning human rights, work, the environment and the fight against corruption. Enagás provides a public and transparent record of the progress it has made in this field in an annual report.

Additionally, to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, Enagás, along with 250 other companies from across the globe, made the following commitment as part of an initiative promoted by the Global Compact to encourage respect for human rights

“On the occasion of the 60th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, we, business leaders from all corners of the world, call on governments to implement fully their human rights obligations. We also reiterate our own commitment to respect and support human rights within our sphere of influence. Human rights are universal and are an important business concern all over the globe.”

The above achievements, in addition to the Enagás Position on Corporate Responsibility, underpin the Company’s commitment to including the principles and action lines of corporate responsibility in its Management Model.  Enagás will therefore base its strategy around the following corporate challenges:

  • Service, reliability and accessibility
  • Transparency, ethics and integrity
  • Developing human capital
  • Safety
  • Biodiversity
  • Climate change
  • Helping the community

The Quality, Excellence and Sustainability Master Plan for 2009-2012, which entailed implementing more than 100 initiatives in 2009, is the basis enabling Enagás to progress in meeting the corporate challenges defined.

Monitoring of application of the management model and the implementation of this Master Plan is the responsibility of the Sustainability Committee, which comprises representatives of all the key business areas and departments in the area of CSR.

On 30 April 2010, the General Shareholders’ Meeting approved bylaw amendments to attribute to the Appointments, Remuneration and Corporate Responsibility Committee the added duties of setting general corporate social responsibility and corporate governance policy.

Enagás has issued its 2009 Annual Report, which was verified for the first time in accordance with standard AA1000, having obtained, for the second consecutive year, the top score awarded by the Global Reporting Initiative - GRI (A+).
